Transit Supportive Development

Overview

The purpose of the project is to identify those land use approaches that support transit use and to demonstrate that the obstacles to transit supportive development can be overcome. The project consists of two phases: 1) an exploration of policies and actions that public agencies can take to ensure land uses support transit and transit-oriented development, and, 2) the initiation and completion of three pilot projects that will demonstrate the feasibility of linking transit services and land use planning in three communities. The products of these demonstration projects will be the development of prototypes for transit supportive development in three different settings.

Key questions the NYSMPOs would like to explore as part of this research include:

· How can local land use development decisions in New York State be better integrated with regional transit networks and vice versa?

· What kinds of public policies (e.g. site planning, zoning regulations, etc.) and transportation investments can encourage land use development patterns that are supportive of public transit and other alternatives to single-occupant vehicle travel?

· What role can MPOs play in working toward such outcomes? Are there transferable lessons from other places that can influence transit and land use planning in New York State?
